SIR – The alterations to the road layout at Saltaire roundabout, while to be welcomed, are surely only tinkering with a problem far too great for that sort of answer.

To imply that these will solve the current bottleneck is surely wishful thinking. While it may provide a temporary slight improvement, I would suggest that this will be short lived.

In the current economic climate, one understands that the previously suggested tunnel under Saltaire is too costly in the short-term.

However, this has to be the only acceptable long-term solution to the problem. It is vital that this proposal is kept on the table, so that it can be put into effect as soon as possible, even if it is several years away at the moment.

The World Heritage Site that is Saltaire deserves nothing less.
