SIR – While I know how frustrating it is to have to wait a long time in a Post Office queue, I had the opposite experience to Mrs J A Whitfield (T&A, March 8).

A couple of weeks ago I got to Darley Street Post Office at 5.15pm with two items of ‘next day delivery’ business mail.

The ticket machine was broken and there was a huge queue. It seemed unlikely I would get to a window and complete my transaction before the letters and parcels were taken off to the sorting office at 5.25pm.

A gentleman, who I believe to be the manager, began working his way down the queue sorting out what needed to go urgently.

Most of the counter windows were open but he opened another one for ‘next day delivery’ mail. The woman in front of me had a whole sackful, so he opened yet another window that he staffed himself.

I had heard earlier that day that Post Office boss Adam Crozier had been given a huge bonus for his work ‘modernising’ the Post Office.

I would have given the bonus to the Darley Street manager and his staff who coped so well when the newly installed equipment packed up!
