SIR – The 15p increase in off-peak train travel for concessionary card holders could hardly be called extortionate when they will still be able to travel the length and breadth of the country for just 50p. What’s more, they will also have free off-peak local bus travel throughout England.
D W Murgatroyd thinks the rise is unfair but Mrs P Briggs doesn’t know why anybody should complain (T&A, February 25). And few will find it hard to believe that card holders have not got the wherewithal to meet this extra cost.
Nor should the council tax rise of just under 18p per week for the 64 per cent of householders in Band A cause concern. We’re talking about pence, not pounds.
