SIR – Following the closure of the Corus steel plant in Redcar and the loss of 1,600 jobs in spite of an 80 per cent full order-book, it is now revealed that Corus were paid an astronomical amount of EU funds for lowering the Community’s carbon footprint; that will make the citizens of Redcar feel much better, won’t it?
Now we find that seats for the British-funded 2012 Olympic Games will not go first choice to we Brits.
We will have to take our place in the queue along with all the other billions of Euro citizens because the EU Commission declares that to give us first choice is against the spirit of the Community members – we only pay for the whole kit-and-caboodle so that others can walk in first.
If these are the joys of being at the centre of European affairs, to quote Blair - I think it would be much better for us to be way out beyond the widest possible perimeter.
