SIR – I have respect for Councillor John Pennington, but his suggestion about Saltaire roundabout (Letters, February 22) was off the mark.

On a practical level, a group of local residents have been working with highway planners from Bradford Council for months now, and have come up with a set of options which are ready to be presented at a special neighbourhood forum meeting on March16, 7.30pm, in Victoria Hall.

New ideas were invited at the beginning of the process. The plans can also be viewed at Hughes Bakery, at the Hirst Wood Action Day, on March 6, from 10am to 1pm.

I really hope that removing pedestrians from the street and making them climb up on bridged walkways over the roundabout will not be in the plans. Footbridges were the favoured option of planners in the Sixties and Seventies. However history now shows us that bridges, ironically, divide communities, cutting off people from shops and services. Removing people from a street in this way creates no-go areas.

As a World Heritage Site and as a strong community, Saltaire deserves better. I’m optimistic that because local people have been more actively involved this time, the new plans will give us a more workable solution. Let’s see.
