SIR – I would like to challenge the assertion made by Terry Tordoff (Letters, February 22) that the “useless” Government does not recognise the needs of young people and provide resources for “places to go”.
He really should do some basic research before trying to make political points.
Far from being useless, the Government has a very clear policy for promoting positive activities for young people – Aiming High For Young People: a ten-year strategy for positive activities.
This is also backed by substantial resources to every local authority in England through the Youth Opportunities Fund and the Youth Capital Fund that has provided £675,000 per year for the last three years to youth projects throughout Bradford district.
In addition, Bradford is receiving £5 million from the Government’s MyPlace funding to provide a state-of-the-art youth facility to be built on Thornton Road, adjacent to the city centre.
Called Culture Fusion, the design and planning is heavily influenced by young people themselves and is a joint project between City of Bradford YMCA and Bradford Council. Development should start later this year.
I would say this is a responsible, positive approach by Government.
