SIR – It seems no- one can help in my quest to continue working after age 65, in a job I do three days a week, thoroughly enjoy, and am perfectly capable of doing.

I work for the Housebound Service, part of the mobile services of Central Library, Bradford.

I know it is in the rules we retire at 65, but isn’t it time the rules were changed? After all, younger people working at the library will have to work on longer than 65 to get their full pension, so the situation seems illogical.

I protested to my manager: they quoted the rules! I protested to ‘human resources’: they quoted the rules! I was granted a meeting with management: they quoted the rules!

I even wrote to the head of the Council, Mr Tony Reeves. My reply was another letter quoting the rules.

I have even contacted Baroness Prosser at the House of Lords who has been petitioning the Government on the basis that enforced retirement at 65 is an infringement of human rights, and received a sympathetic reply.

However, as she said, it is the Government that could eventually bring the legislation that would force councils to change these outdated rules.
