SIR – I am extremely angry about the huge rise from 35p to 65p in pensioners’ train fares. How can this extra tax on English pensioners be justified?
Councillor Greaves’s excuse (T&A, February 19) is “it’s only 5p per year increase since the last increase”. It’s still almost 100 per cent more.
What is even more annoying is that Scottish, Welsh and Ulster pensioners pay nothing! This is discrimination against English pensioners. Why should we be singled out? We all pay the same taxes.
Perhaps the addresses for all members of the West Yorkshire Integrated Transport Authority who agreed this anti-English rip-off could be published. Then I urge all pensioners to write to them and not vote for them at the next election.
What has happened to Gordon Brown’s election promise of “fair treatment for all”?
