SIR – Re your Transport Special article (February 16). Since the closure of Ireland Bridge in Bingley, traffic congestion along the old A650 has certainly increased during the morning commute, particularly traffic travelling towards the Cottingley lights.
Traditionally, once the traffic flow has passed over the Cottingley Bridge and continued round the bend, the traffic would naturally position itself into two lanes, one queue ready for a right turn at Cottingley lights, and the other to proceed straight on towards the Bankfield roundabout.
Perhaps Bradford Council’s principal engineer for transport planning, Joe Grint, can explain the wisdom in effectively narrowing this stretch of road by introducing a cycle lane?
If this measure is part and parcel of the ‘jam-busting initiative’, then heaven help us.
Thank goodness that the motorists travelling this route have the good sense to ignore this latest ‘initiative’, otherwise traffic would be backed up to Keighley and beyond.
