SIR – Your correspondent A Briggs (T&A, February 15) suggests a glass dome above the roundabout at Saltaire to accommodate pedestrians, but is not far off the mark.

I spent three years at the Old Tramshed traffic-watching and know the problems intimately.

The two crossings should be removed and lights at Victoria Road, Grosvenor Road and the Ring of Bells recalibrated to allow better traffic flow.

For proof, build two temporary walkways over for pedestrians before something more permanent to include disabled facilities.

In the current economic climate, it will be a long while before millions of pounds are available to build a loop road on the petrol station site – the public need someone to help now.

As an aside, remind me how far away is the nearest filling station?
