That one of the district’s major tourist attractions still does not have a proper visitor information centre is bordering on the scandalous.

Saltaire is, after all, not just of local, or even national, interest – it is a World Heritage Site, pulling in people from far beyond these shores.

What they must make of the current lack of facilities does not bear thinking about, but it certainly cannot leave them with the best impressions of the district.

Many other areas would give their eye teeth to have an attraction of such global status.

How many of them, in such circumstances, would have failed to provide a proper information centre?

Now, at long last, this could soon be put right with the Council in negotiations with a property owner to secure premises in a busy part of the village, money set aside to pay for it, and plans for a summer opening.

This is exactly what many residents have been asking for and should help boost businesses.

It will also give locals a well-earned respite from their unofficial duty of answering the queries of confused tourists.

It is a task many have performed patiently and proudly in the absence of a proper visitor centre – but one which they really should not have had to do.
