SIR – It now appears 26 per cent of the population are suspicious of the agenda behind global warming.

The IPCC has already produced misleading information about the amount of warming, the Himalayan glaciers, sea levels affecting Holland and the vulnerability of the Amazon rainforest.

Now we find the Green brigade suggesting half the countries in the world bankrupt themselves by being forced to use renewable energy.

Renewable energy is, of course, a nonsense. Solar power, wind power and tidal power are hugely expensive, hugely inefficient and hugely unreliable.

Even if we covered most of Britain with solar panels and wind farms, they could never produce the energy required to keep this country running as the old coal and nuclear plants are phased out.

The only cost-effective and efficient way forward is nuclear power and clean coal-fired power plants.

There are millions of tons of coal right under our feet, yet we continue to import massively expensive gas and oil from unstable sources like Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

If the Government had given this problem a bit of forethought and introduced nuclear and clean coal power stations we could, by 2015, have been energy independent.
