SIR – I read with great interest the major feature on short/medium-term future of the Westfield building site.
What jumped out at me was the comment from the Westfield spokesman who referred to continuing to monitor the demand for new retail space and economic conditions in all markets in which we operate, with a view to determining “if and when” we can restart our development pipeline.
I wonder whether the reference to “if” is the start of a conditioning process leading to Westfield pulling out of the development altogether? We will see!
Meanwhile the Council continues to clutch at straws by saying that any solution must involve the community in contributing to the final answer.
Too late is the cry, they should have consulted before the shops were demolished and ensured punitive enforceable penalties could have been invoked for failure to proceed within a reasonable timescale.
They cannot get away with just blaming the recession, as the site was cleared several years in advance of this.
I, like many Bradfordians, fear for the future of our-once proud City.
