SIR – There was a travel article in a national weekend newspaper recently about Dresden with a photo showing a beautiful square with ancient buildings, looking not unlike Bradford city centre.
The surprise is that the buildings are all post-war construction.
The article suggesting Dresden as a tourist destination is titled ‘The newest 17th century city in the world’, because the Germans, who show a keen interest in their built environment, meticulously rebuilt the city facades as they used to be.
The facades are retrospective beauties with modern interiors. It shows that classic buildings of style attract visitors.
Let’s take a leaf out of Dresden’s book and play to our architectural heritage strengths.
