SIR – I am delighted that, after five years, our bold councillors might actually be taking steps to improve the Wastefield bomb site.
After the Will Alsop disaster, the Wastefield disaster, the BCR disaster and the potential Odeon disaster, the Council might finally be doing something to improve the city centre.
Incidentally, on February 27, 2007, one of my letters in the T&A said: “Have any of our esteemed councillors thought how to make the site a little less like Hiroshima in 1945? How about forcing Westfield to tear down those horrendous hordings and remove the portable buildings.
“Next make them bulldoze Mount Forster into undulating hillocks and toss a little grass seed around. Plant a few bushes and introduce some seating.
Half of the site could be turned into car parking and offered free to people shopping in Bradford. This might encourage people to venture into the city centre again and entrepreneurs to open up some of the surviving empty shops.”
It’s taken the Council exactly three years to get round to my suggestion, but I wish they’d chosen a better name for this project other than the appalling management-speak PC-jargonated “Community Garden”. What a boring name!
