The closure of Tito’s nightclub, in Ivegate, Bradford, could hardly be described as unexpected – overdue, perhaps, but not unexpected.

The only surprising element is that the final nail in its coffin was the sale of alcohol to an under-age youth rather than the sickening fights which were a seemingly frequent occurrence outside the club.

It could be argued such scenes, while appalling, are a feature of every major town and city and that Ivegate and Tito’s only came to the authorities’ attention in the first place because this trouble was captured on CCTV by a nearby resident.

That certainly put the club in the public eye – while giving some the opportunity to drag Bradford’s name through the mud into the bargain.

But hopefully the police and Council knew about any problems associated with this venue in any event and would have acted in the way they did, CCTV footage or no CCTV footage.

What this situation has shown is that nightclubs do not always sit well next to retail and residential properties and now it has closed there is a great opportunity to decide how this part of the city centre should develop.

Ivegate is certainly one of Bradford’s more characterful and potentially attractive shopping streets and perhaps its future lies in making more of this.

What it definitely does not need is another nightclub because we know that can lead to.
