SIR – We all know the expression “a dog is for life, not just for Christmas”.
But here at PDSA, we find that some people still buy pets as gifts at this time of year. Our advice is simple: don’t!
Pets bought as presents can be a recipe for disaster. When bought as a surprise, a pet can be seen as a burden rather than the wonderful addition to someone’s life that a pet should be.
So please remember that a pet is a serious commitment.
They can bring love and affection to a home, but an owner needs to meet a pet’s needs throughout its life.
People need to think very carefully before getting a pet to avoid making mistakes which can prove very costly, both emotionally and financially, for pets and owners alike.
