SIR – Regarding the plans to build a new Tesco on the site of the former Bingley Auction Mart, Malcolm Chapman (T&A, December 8) seems to have missed the point.
I, for one, strongly supported the building of the Bingley Relief Road as I live close to the old Keighley road. Myself and others who live in Crossflatts have noticed a gradual but considerable increase in traffic along this road since the bypass was opened six years ago.
The opening of a new Tesco will give a huge boost to the amount of traffic choking up Bingley again and making life difficult for pedestrians and road users. This can already be seen on Sunday mornings when the car boot sale takes place.
Bingley might not have the best of trade, but it is trying hard to improve itself. I don’t know how many people Mr Chapman has spoken to, but most people I know don’t want a Tesco. We already have a Tesco Express in Crossflatts and a new Asda opened in July only two miles up the road in Keighley. Is that far to travel?
At Bingley Show, a survey showed a 50/50 split for and against the plan, but many of those who took part may well have come from further afield and would not be affected.
