SIR – One only needs to read the web postings on your report of the struggling German market (T&A, December 3) to see the proof that the game’s up for Bradford. We note also that a massive investment plan was announced for Sheffield to become the UK centre of the nuclear power engineering industry – congratulations, Sheffield. But nothing for Bradford, and none likely either.
There’s no point trying and failing to attract industry when it simply doesn’t want to be here, so why not just attract people instead?
Set Bradford up as the ‘residence of choice’ for all the surrounding industrial successes.
Develop world-beating fast transport – for roads, rail and buses – between Bradford and Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester etc, and build a full range of attractive housing options for all styles and price ranges.
Then the only companies Bradford needs are those which cater for people, such as retail, entertainment and services.
It may be a tad quiet during the weekdays, but what an atmosphere at evenings or weekends!
I wonder if there’s a vacant cinema/theatre building anywhere as a vital starting-point for this new strategy?
