SIR – I do not condone driving without insurance but, according to the internet, the penalties are a fixed-penalty of £200 and a fine, presumably handed out by a magistrate or judge, not a police officer, of £5,000.
I, therefore, question the legality of the confiscation and crushing of the vehicle.
In any case, it is not very ‘green’ to go to the lengths of removing all non-metal items, as the man in the street has to do with his tin cans, before it is crushed for recycling.
Better to sell it to offset against the impending fine. Where do the Green councillors stand on this issue?
