SIR – Unlike David Jennings (Letters, November 25) I can see nothing wrong with MPs employing their relatives. From a number of letters I have received from our MP Philip Davies, I conclude that he has a well-run private office which deals promptly with what must be an enormous postbag.

It is the mark of a conscientious constituency MP that complaints, suggestions, etc are dealt with in a timely manner, and although none of mine were matters of life and death, I have been pleased to note that all received a response within 14 days.

For this vital part of Mr Davies’s responsibilities he has an allowance of about £100,000, which at London secretarial rates suggests a rather small team which could be increased if some of its members worked for love rather than financial gain.

The fact that a small minority of MPs have abused the system should not be a reason for denying the others the means of providing a better service to their constituents than would be the case if they are obliged to pay all their staff at commercial rates.
