SIR – The sorry saga of the Gary McKinnon case continues – it has been going on for seven years.
Gary McKinnon is the hacker with Asperger’s Syndrome (a form of obsessive autism) who hacked the Pentagon’s inadequately-firewalled computers looking for information about his obsession, UFOs.
Gary is being extradited under the 2003 Extradition Treaty which allows the US to seek extradition of a UK citizen without having, any longer, to present a prima facie case (ie evidence) in court.
In the US, Gary faces a term of up to 60 years for what, if he was tried here, would probably involve a two-year suspended sentence: welcome to “the War on Terror”.
Because that is what this case is about, the US wanting to make an example, with our Government’s collusion.
We have a Government that is refusing to provide legal, or just, protection of its own citizens, acting “spinelessly”, to quote Gary’s lawyer.
