SIR – In his letter of October 19, Brian Holmans believes that I was a bit too hasty in swallowing the ‘Conservative line’ regarding the Damian Green affair, and if I’d waited a few more days, it was apparent that the matter had suddenly vanished from view, which in his opinion was due to the media losing interest, after Gordon Brown and Jacqui Smith were found to be telling the truth.

That really is fanciful of Mr Holmans, because we all know there can be no further advance on this story until the New Year.

However, the media do not need to hang around long with this disaster-prone Government to be rewarded with another ‘front-pager’ – the deliberate attempt to deceive everyone with their own interpretation of knife-crime statistics.

Perhaps it could be Mr Holmans who has swallowed too much line, putting his trust in Gordon Brown and Jacqui Smith.
