SIR – I totally support Bradford Council and Shipley College who have commendably co-operated in plans for a Tourist Information Centre in the old Dining Hall on Victoria Road in Saltaire – an ideal location.
I am equally confident the knowledge and experience of officers such as World Heritage Site officer Craig McHugh will ensure this will be a quality attraction in Saltaire.
My concern is what will be provided over the next year or more until these plans are realised.
Providing tourist information on-site is such a basic requirement that I am amazed that no-one in the Council has seen it as a priority. Surely money must have been allocated for it in past budgets?
Other centres have all enjoyed the presence of a TIC for many years. Based in Bradford, officers have failed to appreciate the urgency of the need in Saltaire, and have left it to local shopkeepers to soak up the pressure. Creative thinking and prompt action, utilising the goodwill which exists from local businesses, could provide an effective interim arrangement.
Saltaire has been a World Heritage Site since 2001. I doubt there is another site where the needs of visitors have been so neglected.
