SIR – I see in the Queen’s speech there are plans to give the police the power to stop anyone ‘in country’ and ask for ID.
Refusal to co-operate will carry a £5,000 fine or up to 51 weeks in prison.
This is yet another unjustifiable authoritarian measure, clearly aimed at preparing the ground, not only for compulsory ID cards, but also for the compulsion to carry them.
All pretence that the cards and the National Identity Register are for citizen’s benefit is surely now exposed as the sham it always was. Papers please!
