SIR – I had a little smile to myself when I read about schools in Bradford being forced to close because of the fall of snow on Thursday, December 4.

I can understand the modern safety issues and problems with staff getting to work, but I remember the 1950s and 1960s when I went to school and we had snowfall for days and days.

I remember boys and girls – all bare-legged – shivering by the school radiator, trying to dry their sodden gloves and mittens. Even the free school milk was frozen solid!

Did the schools in Bradford close because of the snow back then? As far as I can remember, never! So, are we not getting a little soft nowadays?
