SIR - I have criticised the police on many occasions but comments like those of A Shipman (T&A, January 30) are, I think, unreasonable.

Whether a police officer is paid too much is irrelevant. He is not allowed to strike, as Mr Shipman is, if he is not retired, and has to rely upon decisions by a pay board, by which he is bound but the other party are not.

It is Gordon Brown and his cronies, who should pack it in and get a new job.
