Sir - I see that Jason Smith of UKIP has gone off half-cocked again, The European Gendarmerie Treaty to which he refers (T&A, January 8) has only five signatories: France, Italy, Portugal, Spain and The Netherlands. The other 22 EU Member States have not signed up to it.
The treaty is designed to provide a ready-made paramilitary force that the EU, the UN and NATO can call on in crisis situations as a transitional force in peace-keeping operations such as in Bosnia-Herzegovina where it will be first deployed.
You won't be seeing Bobbies in kepis patrolling Market Street anytime soon.
