SIR - Philip Bird (T&A, December 15) is wrong about biodegradable plastic bags, as they are even worse than the normal plastic ones that just use up oil in their manufacture.
The plastic film can't be recycled and the bags only disintegrate because they include corn starch, and that produces carbon dioxide, or methane if buried.
Responsible members of the public would only use cloth bags, made from jute, flax, hemp or old coats and clothes and so reduce the waste going to landfill.
