SIR - Philip Bird (T&A, December 10) says bad driving is the main cause of "accidents". Speeding is bad driving. Speed exacerbates all other driving faults.

With the huge increase in traffic volume and the weight and size of vehicles that are currently popular, we might have expected many more deaths and injuries on our roads. Fortunately that has not been the case.

Those who live adjacent to roads with speed cameras are grateful for the comparative peace and safety that they bring.
