SIR - The announcement that Bradford's spending of £5 million on advertising is the fourth-highest in the country gave me pause for thought On one hand I congratulate the Council on having one of the best corporate identities of any local authority. Their widespread use of the Orange and Blue banded scheme for all literature and signage is excellent.

On the other they do seem to spend a large amount of this budget on propaganda for their own citizens at the expense of advertising the city further afield.

I have visited most of the towns, cities and tourist spots in the North, and while I invariably find brochures and leaflets about Leeds (13th in the list) and even Calderdale (161st) I rarely see anything about Bradford.

Recently in this column R J Lacey asked the Council to support Yorkshire Building Society Brass Band, and now we hear The Priestley is also in danger.

Switching a comparatively small amount from the advertising budget to sponsor organisations like these would more than pay for itself in prestige and publicity for our city.

Our other premier brass band, Black Dyke, had to rely on Leeds Metropolitan University for its sponsorship, but that university has well and truly got the message about publicity through sponsorship.

Perhaps our Council could take a leaf out of their book.
