SIR - Brian Holmans (T&A, December 6) hardly proves his point on where an MP's priorities should lie between party and constituents with the example he gives in the name of Philip Davies. The latter, if I have judged him correctly, would vote in accordance with the wishes of the majority, for our departure from the EU and the fact that this were the party's policy, would be a bonus for him.
Surely priorities are not cut and dried. An MP receives a vote mainly on the back of the mandate his party has put before the electorate.
Consequently he should toe the party line on main policy, unless he is confident that on a particular matter the majority of his constituents hold a different view, which accords with his own conscience.
