SIR - Re: post office closures delayed for the majority of the country (T&A, November 22). The official reason claimed by the government is so the details can be discussed in the calm after the next local elections in May 2008.

This approach is supported by all Labour groups everywhere, but it is obvious to the rest of us that this position is being manufactured to suit their political purpose.

The trustworthiness of this government is in perpetual decline, their competence is questioned daily.

Labour points out closures are the responsibility of the Post Office, but the government is a major shareholder. The same cartel constantly reduces the range of services offered, increasing losses and forcing a reduction of sites.

Few electors will know their fate except in three trial constituencies across the North, including Keighley, where the political storm is just breaking (T&A, November 27).

These informed voters become the fortunate ones, having the chance to respond accordingly at the ballot box. The Keighley East ward has two post offices shutting down; remember who decided your future next May.

Most of us will be gutted next summer, with nearly two years to the following local elections.
