SIR - Further to the correspondence regarding parking charges in shoppers' car parks. We too were caught with a heavy fine in Keighley.

On our 58th wedding anniversary we parked in Cavendish Street car park, in a disabled space outside the Westgate store, and displayed the blue badge which my husband has had for nine years.

We were horrified, on our return one-and-a-half hours later to find a ticket on the windshield. When challenged, the attendant said that these spaces were not free; a ticket must be paid for and displayed.

There were no signs to inform disabled shoppers of this, but he pointed to the ticket machine and indeed, there it was, in very small print, lost among the instructions on how to pay.

The machine was at least 60 yards away from the spaces, but if you believe these spaces are free, why would you need to go to the machine?

I wrote to the parking company, reluctantly enclosing a cheque for £40 and pointing out the lack of visible signs. Needless to say, I have had no reply.

So, disabled shoppers, make sure you check any ticket machines before parking or, like us, you may get a nasty shock.
