SIR - Our Prime Minister when in Churchillian mode tells us that we are in a war but against an unseen enemy. So when the anti-maskers (T&A, July 21) pursue their campaign, they are in effect giving aid and comfort to the enemy.
The offence being alleged is one of ‘persons owing allegiance to our Lady the Queen, and while a war is being carried on by the virus known as Covid 19 against our realm did traitorously adhere to the Queen’s enemies by refusing to wear a face mask in the circumstances required by law.’
This charge in its original form was levelled against William Joyce - a Nazi sympathiser for making broadcasts throughout the war in an attempt to undermine the morale of the British people. He was found guilty of treason and hanged on January 3, 1946
