SIR - In reply to Douglas Hartley (T&A, July 31), with regards to concerns over the drainage systems, an overflow tunnel constructed in the late 1980s to divert flows away from the city centre proved its worth in the recent heavy rains in June.
While Bradford did not have quite the same volumes of water as some areas, it was substantially higher than normal and demonstrates that forward thinking investment is one of the reasons why Bradford enjoys a national reputation for being at the forefront of water management innovation.
We are confident that our drainage systems will continue to be efficient as the regeneration of the city progresses.
Tony Poole, Principal Engineer Drainage, Bradford Metropolitan District Council, City Hall, Bradford
