SIR - After more than 40 years waiting for the international community to wake up to the effect of burning fossil fuels I suppose it is inevitable there are those who don't want to see the skeleton in the cupboard.

The fairy tales, written in an attempt to absolve mankind of its responsibility for global warming, leave me unsurprised there is also a belief in bogeymen.

We are intent on using up every last ounce available and we are spoiled indeed if we suppose that this all comes for free.

Our hope lies in technology but research too has a cost in real hard cash.

This is not a time for misers.
