Flexible trams SIR - The development of tram-trains, which are capable of sharing pathways with traditional rail, but which are able to run on streets, offer potentially more co-ordinated travel opportunities, than at present (T&A, June 28).

For example, trams are not restrained by traditional rail alignments and are better able to penetrate suburban areas, where the main population is situated.

Trams also allow more frequent intermediate stops than traditional rail.

In the case of Bradford, tram-trains would be able to connect the northern network at Forster Square Station with the network at the Interchange, allowing though journeys without change from for example Shipley to Halifax.

However, tram-trains must not be used as a means of replacing heavy rail on the Aire Valley and Harrogate lines, but rather to supplement the existing services./ Traditional rail often serves a different purpose, being quicker, more comfortable, and able to carry larger number of people than trams.

Following the cancellation of Leeds Supertram, new initiatives are to be welcomed in Bradford, and West Yorkshire in general.
