SIR - The fact that molecules of carbon dioxide don't have nationalities might help Mr Bird (T&A, July 3) understand why we want less of them, whether they originate in Shipley or Shanghai.
They also last in the atmosphere, the oceans and trees for at least 100 years.
The suggestion by the UN recognised Bradfordian Aubrey Meyer that we contract and converge has much to recommend it.
By this he means rich countries will need to produce less CO2 while poor ones can produce more, until we all produce the same. Then we can all reduce the world total through changing our behaviour and technology.
His ideas are challenging and can be found on www.gci.org.uk Keith Thomson, Heights Lane, Bradford
