SIR - I can't think of anyone I'd rather not be stuck in a lift with than Salman Rushdie, except perhaps Paris Hilton. I wouldn't honour him, but as an author he should always have the right to write.

Some people want to kill, or seriously harm, those who criticise or satirise their religion, and those who simply portray religious matters and motifs without religious sanction. Such people are both very insecure, and dangerous.
