SIR - Re your article (T&A, May 30) headlined "Sent home without help".

From the age of 17 until retiring five years ago I was a nurse.

When I read in the paper almost every week how an elderly person has been discharged from hospital with no thought given as to how they will cope, I feel angry and ashamed.

What has happened to the caring profession?

If there is any doubt at all the person is not going to manage, all the relevant organisations should meet and arrange a package of care prior to discharge.

This did not happen in Mrs Butterworth's case. What happened to a referral by the liaison nurse to the district nurses? Was this lady supposed to dress her own wound?

Trust chief executive Miles Scott says there is no case to answer. It is a disgrace to the hospital. Does he really know what is happening on the wards? I doubt it very much.

I hope Mrs Butterworth's family get satisfactory answers by the hospital after the investigations. I have a feeling the stock phrase will be given "Lessons will be learned" which I doubt very much. Till the next time!
