SIR - Further to the discussion concerning the benefits or otherwise of a cross-city rail link (T&A, May 28), it is envisaged that a cross-city rail link would connect the Shipley-Bradford line to the north with the network at Bradford Interchange, which would allow direct journeys from the north of Bradford to the south, such as Skipton to Halifax.

This would obviate the need to change trains at Leeds or alight at one station and walk across to the other.

The Shipley-Airedale road, connecting the north of Bradford with the south had been built for the very purpose of allowing cross-city journeys, hence we may conclude from this that a rail link would help to reduce existing traffic journeys, hence reducing pollution and congestion.

A cross-city rail link would place Bradford on the main rail network, extending links with other centres, and improving direct services to and from the city.

As a result, Bradford's profile would be raised, providing an impetus for further development.

Other benefits would include enhancing local services, such as a Leeds circular via Shipley and Bramley, operating in both directions.

The Morecambe and Carlisle trains would be able to run via Bradford.
