SIR - E Firth (T&A Letters, May 25) sounds a very disillusioned man and not at all pleased with his military service and his treatment while performing the same. I wonder why?
I always voted Conservative when a serving soldier because there was so many "conchies" and "reds under the bed" in the Labour at that time and the Conservative Party looked after the soldiers' pockets (we all, in the main, vote with our pockets, I think).
I must agree that the military never looks after "its own", whether in or out of uniform, and agree with him that the only time we had a politician who had sway who was in "metaphorical khaki" was Mr Profumo.
I had the honour to meet him when he visited our Division while I was serving in BAOR in 1962 or 1963. It was a shame that he was pilloried for what now is acceptable (nay almost expected) in politics.
