SIR - A few years ago we sent criminals on holiday abroad in an attempt at rehabilitation. It didn't work.

A few centuries ago they were transported to Botany Bay. That worked because we never saw them again.

Unfortunately we can't do that nowadays but at least if those apprehended were severely punished instead of being given a slap on the wrist we might deter mindless yobs like those who wrecked Frizinghall Station (T&A, May 19).
