SIR - My fellow Baildoner, Stewart Hanson, while nobly castigating the EU on road-pricing, is incorrect when he makes reference to "what we voted for in our Heath referendum" (T&A, May 25).

In fact, our only referendum opportunity on the Europe issue was granted by Harold Wilson's Labour government in 1975, more than two years after joining, and one year after the Tory traitor Edward Heath had been ignominiously driven from office.

But with all the perceived "loonies" clustered on the "Out" side, and some strange temporary bedfellows, "the reasonable brigade", supporting the "In" side, it came as no surprise that 67 per cent of the voters were so easily duped by the latter case.

Had more voters realised at the time where this was leading, or had they known that the "In" campaign was largely funded by the CIA (for reasons too complex to cover in 200 words here), then a different result may have ensued.

One thing's for sure, now that we are all enlightened, none of our current mainstream parties will ever dare to give us that same chance again. More's the pity!
