SIR - Jim Greenhalf's report (T&A, May 12) of his visit to Lille was interesting, not least because my wife and I had recently had a weekend break there.
However, his remark about the high-speed trains between London and Lille was a little misleading.
Eurostar, the company operating the trains through the Channel Tunnel, is owned partly by British companies, and has been running trains between London and France/Belgium since 1994.
Although I couldn't tell Jim how long it takes Bradford City to win or lose a game, I can tell him that it takes these trains either just under or over one-and-three-quarter hours (depending on whether the train stops at Ashford) to travel between London and Lille.
In November of this year, the London Eurostar terminus will be at St Pancras. This will be very convenient for travellers from the North, as this station is within walking distance from King's Cross.
Also, the journey times to destinations beyond the Channel Tunnel will be reduced by about 20 minutes, thus making rail travel an even more attractive option.
Our return journey from out hotel in Lille to our front door in Bradford took six-and-a-half hours. Although this may be slightly longer than the door-to-door journey time using air transport, travel by rail does provide a much more eco-friendly means of travelling.
