SIR - Derek Taylor, selected by local Conservatives to stand for Shipley in the recent council elections, describes hundreds of local residents as "wholly hypocritical" for voicing legitimate concerns about the proposed Saltaire bypass (T&A, May 11).

Perhaps he is already thinking of running again next year?

As I have previously explained, the new road will not significantly reduce traffic congestion in Saltaire - in fact, it is intended primarily to make it easier for freight traffic to access the Aire Valley commercial corridor as a whole.

This is why local green councillors favour investing instead in a range of alternative transport strategies to ease Saltaire's traffic gridlock.

It is also important to remember that the bypass will literally drive a swathe of destruction through our chunk of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal Conservation Area.

It is barely a year since Bradford Council approved the Conservation Area boundaries, having won a prestigious national award in 2005 for the earlier consultation process.

The judges welcomed the Council's promise at the time that the conservation area would mark "the beginning of a better way of doing things".

What would the judges say now, I wonder?
