SIR - In reply to Philip Bird (T&A, May 8), I am not so naive as to think that the world will turn vegan overnight.
It will take a long time to wean us away from our addiction to animal flesh. But that is the way forward if we are not to leave a ravaged world to future generations.
We cannot continue plundering the Earth's limited resources. Rearing animals on an industrial scale for human consumption is placing undue demands on the use of land, animal feed and water, leaving pollution, desertification and disease in its wake.
To quote Gandhi's words: "We need to live simply so others may simply live." This is not occupying the moral high ground, it is common sense.
