SIR - I'm sure most Bradfordians feel for the florist who has to close on Rawson Street due to the Council's uncompromising attitude to pavement displays.

I was no customer, and it isn't a great loss to me, but I respect small businesses and they deserve all the help they can get.

However, I'm afraid the florist is a victim of the current scourge of society, namely political correctness. The Council is obviously pandering to the defenders of the disabled, a worthwhile stance when discretion is used but barmy when good sense does not prevail.

In my estimation, a Sumo wrestler could walk unhindered past the neat little display outside the florist in question. It reminds me of the time when many public toilets were bricked up' when they were deemed impractical for the disabled, thus penalising everybody else who were then deprived of a toilet.

As far as pavements are concerned, I don't see the health and safety people or the police rushing to prosecute the car owners who park on pavements in the Whetley Hill, Leeds Road and Oak Lane area.
