SIR - While we await the commencement of our city centre regeneration I would throw in a suggestion for consideration by the Bradford Centre Regeneration board.
The hilly topography of the city centre has always affected the shopping activity, with both the "top" and "bottom" end of the city suffering as a consequence.
The problem will compound once the retail development in Broadway/Forster Square is completed as people will naturally be drawn to the new shopping destination.
To obviate this potential economic disaster, there is a real need to provide a link between both ends of the city as an integral part of the overall regeneration scheme.
My suggestion would be for the installation of a two-way funicular to run between the bottom of Bank Street to the top of Darley Street. This would not only serve to provide a unique and practical solution to the topographical barrier by uniting the two ends of city centre, but also offer an attractive experience to shoppers and visitors, and provide mobility assistance to elderly people and those with young children.
With a little imagination, the installation costs could be offset through advertising revenue and even a token charge for use.
